A blessing for Keepers, offered at the threshold between receiving an inheritance and carrying it forward.
May your eyes remain open to wonder.
May your hands practice careful work.
May your mind remain curious.
May your heart remain generous.
May you preserve with humility.
May you create with integrity.
May you teach with patience.
May you learn with gratitude.
May you care for what has been entrusted to you,
whether object or idea,
garden or library,
story or specimen,
tradition or discovery,
institution or individual.
May you leave every collection stronger than you found it.
Every page clearer.
Every place more welcoming.
Every work more faithful.
Every person more encouraged.
May those who come after you inherit not only what you preserved, but also the spirit in which you preserved it.
And when your own work is finished,
may another receive the light you carried,
find it burning a little brighter because of your care,
and carry it faithfully onward.
For no Keeper walks the whole road.
Each simply carries the lantern for a little while.
